Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is an American band led by Alex Ebert, vocalist of the power pop group Ima Robot. Their first full-length recording, Up from Below, was released July 7, 2009, digitally and July 14, 2009, physically on Community Records. Their first show as a full band was played July 18, 2007, at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, California.

After breaking up with his girlfriend, moving out of his house with his lifelong friend Nicholas Raymond Kellen, and joining a 12-step program for addiction, Ebert began work on a book about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe.[1] According to Ebert, Sharpe "was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind...but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love." Ebert later met singer Jade Castrinos outside a downtown Los Angeles cafe.[2] In the summer of 2009, as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Ebert, Castrinos, and a group of musicians toured the country by bus. Their first show in 2009 was Marfa, Texas at the Marfa Film Festival.[1] The band recorded their debut album, Up From Below, in Laurel Canyon produced by Aaron Older and Nico Aglietti. It was released on July 14, 2009.
On April 12, 2009, the band released "Desert Song", a music video which is part 1 of a 12-part feature-length musical called SALVIO!.[3] Part 2, "Kisses Over Babylon" was released November 24, 2009 through Spinner.com.[4] Part 3, "40 Day Dream" was released recently.
Their song "Home" was voted number 15 on the Australian Triple J Hottest 100, 2009 countdown, the largest music poll in the world.[5] The song has been featured in many TV shows, videos and commercials, including a trailer for the film Cyrus, NBC's Community, Fox's "Raising Hope, season 4, episode 10 of ABC's Ugly Betty, and Season 3, Episode 6 of the CW's Gossip Girl.
Their song "Janglin" was featured in a television ad for the 2011 Ford Fiesta.[6]
The song "Carries On" was used in the trailer for the film 50/50.[7]
The song "Truth", from Ebert's solo album, was played at the end of first episode of the fourth season of Breaking Bad.
The music video for "Kisses Over Babylon" was featured on a 2011 episode of Beavis and Butt-Head.
The band plans to release solo albums for band members Jade Castrinos and Christian Letts, followed by a second Edward Sharpe album.[13]
